Another day underway. Not a lot to say about today’s run. Mostly smooth water. A bit of wind. A bit of cloud. A bit of sun. Just a few pics. But a great Krogen gathering once we got to Morehead City Yacht Basin.
In one of the pictures I mention Active Captain. This is a wonderful app. Jeff and Karen Siegel started it several/many years ago. And they were rewarded for their hard work by selling it to Garmin last year. Think of it as Yelp/Waze for the water. It is crowd sourced data. Reviews for marinas, great places to anchor, or poor places to anchor, what type of bottom you can expect at anchorages (muddy, rocky, sandy, etc). They may also mention things like “the paper mill stinks on an East wind” or “The horse flies by the farm are a problem in summer”, etc. There’s data on bridge openings and closings.
Someone saw the stump mentioned in the photo below in October and marked its exact location. So, now every boater knows where it is, to expect and avoid it. When it moves or is gone, a boater no doubt will update it. There’s a huge community that uses Active Captain and actively updates obstructions and shoaling, etc.
Three other Krogens were in slips at Morehead City Yacht Basin when we got there, Privateer, Waterford and Way to Go. The owners of Privateer had us all over for a homemade lasagna dinner. Much fun was had. Way to Go was being delivered by fellow Krogenite that is also a delivery captain. He was driving it south for the owner. Waterford was also heading south in the morning. Privateer was staying on a few more days.
Until tomorrow,
Kitty
