…TO DELTAVILLE, VA

Distance traveled: 61 nautical miles
Travel time: 8 hours, 55 minutes

It seems like it’s taken forever, even while the time has flown.  Today was the start of our live-aboard journey and joining the migration south.  The trip from Pasadena to Solomons was part of the journey, but that was to attend the Krogen rendezvous.  Starting today, our destination and timing are governed by our own wishes, and of course the weather.

Deltaville Marina is a popular destination for Krogen cruisers who head to Florida right after the rendezvous.  We stayed behind for a visit to Baton Rouge – many of the rendezvous attendees are already well into Florida.  As the days shorten, it be increasingly difficult to cover these distances in a day.  Although we both like to sleep late, we were awake at 5:30 am ready to go.  We left Washburn’s boatyard at about 7:15 am.

Weather is going to dictate many of our travel decisions until we get much further south.  Today followed several days of high winds and rough seas, and winds and seas will pick up again tomorrow and last for several days.  Today was a bit of a leap of faith in that the seas weren’t completely calm, but we were eager to get going.  The winds, and the waves they produced, were a bit stronger than we’d hoped for, but nothing we couldn’t handle. The worst part was passing the wide mouth of the Potomac.  With WNW winds running down that long stretch of the river and across our bow, we were rolling pretty severely.  We had to zig-zag a bit to keep the waves either behind us or in front.  This probably added about 20 minutes to the trip.

Deltaville is a small, quiet community with several good marinas and boatyards.  After docking and getting electrical connected, Kitty and I had a early dinner then settled in after the long day.  We’ll write more about Deltaville in the next couple of days – we will probably be here until Sunday.
